Semaglutide Injection
How Semaglutide helps with weight loss
Some mornings you just want to feel like yourself again. Steady energy, clothes that fit the way they used to, and a quieter relationship with food. Semaglutide can help you get there, guided by a licensed provider who actually knows your story. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist studied for its ability to support meaningful, sustained weight loss by working with your body's own hunger signals. Here is what the research shows and how it may support your goals.
Reduces appetite and food noise
Semaglutide works by mimicking a natural gut hormone that signals fullness. Many patients report that the constant pull toward food quiets within the first weeks.
Supports sustained weight loss
Unlike crash diets, Semaglutide supports gradual, steady progress over months. Your provider adjusts your dose to help you keep moving in the right direction.
Provider-guided from start to finish
A licensed provider builds your plan, monitors your progress, and stays with you to fine-tune dosing based on how your body responds.
Provider-guided from start to finish
A licensed provider reviews your health history, checks for contraindications, sets an appropriate starting plan, and monitors your progress over time.
How to use it
Clear instructions show you where and how to inject, starting with your very first weekly dose.

Appetite, hormones and metabolism can quietly work against you. A Medura plan is built by a licensed provider to work with your body, not against it.
Hunger stays switched on. Cravings and constant food noise can keep pulling at you, even right after a full meal.
Hormones change the rules. Age, stress, poor sleep, pregnancy and menopause can all shift how your body holds on to weight.
Your body fights back. As you lose weight, metabolism can slow and appetite can rise, so every fresh start feels harder.

What to know about Semaglutide Injection
General education to help you prepare for a conversation with a licensed provider. It is not a prescription or personal medical advice.
- Generic name
- Semaglutide
- Brand names
- Wegovy (weight management), Ozempic and Rybelsus (type 2 diabetes)
- Drug class
- GLP-1 receptor agonist
- Form
- Once-weekly injection under the skin
- Regulatory status
- Compounded, not FDA-approved
- FDA-approved use
- Wegovy: chronic weight management with diet and exercise in adults and children 12+ with obesity, or adults with overweight plus a weight-related condition; also to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight.
Brand-name semaglutide (Wegovy) is FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Semaglutide supplied through a compounding pharmacy is not FDA-approved, and its strength and inactive ingredients may differ from the brand-name product. FDA has reported dosing errors with compounded semaglutide, often from confusion between milligrams and units.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. A compounded preparation can differ from approved products in strength, ingredients, dosage form and how it is absorbed, so it should not be assumed to work the same way as an approved medication. Compounding is meant for patients whose needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug.
Overview
Semaglutide is a weekly medication that helps lower appetite and food intake. It is used alongside nutrition, activity and behavior changes for long-term weight management, not as a stand-alone or short-term fix.
Who may be evaluated for it
- Adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol (the criteria used for the FDA-approved weight-management products).
- People who have tried nutrition and activity changes and want medical support alongside them.
Who may not be a good fit
- Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
- People who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People with a history of pancreatitis, severe stomach-emptying problems (gastroparesis) or a prior serious allergic reaction to the medication need a careful provider review and are often not candidates.
- People using GLP-1 medications for cosmetic weight loss without a medical indication.
How it works
Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after eating. It acts on GLP-1 receptors in the brain areas that control hunger and fullness, so you tend to feel full sooner and think about food less.
It also slows how quickly the stomach empties and helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high. Because it lasts about a week in the body, it is given once weekly.
What is still uncertain
Researchers are still studying exactly how much of the weight effect comes from the brain versus the gut, and why some people respond much more than others.
Potential benefits and realistic timelines
What the evidence supports
- In the 68-week STEP 1 trial of brand-name semaglutide 2.4 mg, adults lost about 15% of body weight on average versus about 2% with placebo, alongside lifestyle changes.
- The SELECT trial showed brand-name semaglutide lowered the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in adults with established heart disease and overweight or obesity.
Early or limited research
- Research is ongoing in areas such as fatty liver disease, sleep apnea and kidney disease.
Not established
- Compounded semaglutide has not been studied in these trials, so the results above cannot be assumed to apply to it.
- There is no evidence that it targets fat in specific body areas.
- First daysSome people notice less appetite within the first week or two, often with mild nausea.
- Weeks 4 to 16The dose is usually raised every 4 weeks. Weight loss tends to build gradually during this period.
- Around 3 to 6 monthsProviders commonly reassess progress once a maintenance dose has been reached.
- After stoppingStudies show much of the lost weight often returns after stopping, so benefits depend on continued treatment and habits.
Results vary from person to person. Your provider decides whether and how long to continue.
How it’s used
For brand-name Wegovy, the label starts at 0.25 mg once weekly and increases every 4 weeks (0.5, 1, 1.7, then 2.4 mg) to reduce stomach side effects. Compounded products may be measured differently, so always follow the dose and units on your pharmacy label.
- Injected under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm once a week, on the same day each week, with or without food.
- Rotate injection sites each week.
- Your provider decides your dose, how fast to increase it and whether to stay at a lower dose.
- Eating smaller meals, stopping when full, and limiting greasy foods can reduce nausea.
If you miss a dose
Per the Wegovy label: if your next dose is more than 2 days (48 hours) away, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is less than 2 days away, skip it. If you miss more than 2 weeks, contact your provider before restarting, as the dose may need to be lowered.
Storage and handling
Store as directed on the pharmacy label. Most injectable semaglutide is kept refrigerated and protected from light, and must not be frozen. Never share needles or pens.
Your prescription label and provider instructions always take priority over this general information. Do not change your dose or stop without talking to your provider.
Side effects and safety
More common, usually manageable
- Nausea
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain, bloating or burping
- Headache and tiredness
- Injection-site redness
Less common but serious
- Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
- Gallbladder problems, including gallstones.
- Kidney injury, usually from dehydration after vomiting or diarrhea.
- Low blood sugar, mainly when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea.
- Serious allergic reactions.
- Thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodent studies (boxed warning on the FDA-approved products); whether this happens in humans is unknown.
- Slowed stomach emptying, which can raise the risk of inhaling stomach contents during anesthesia or sedation.
- Worsening diabetic eye disease (retinopathy) in people with diabetes.
- Increased heart rate.
- Depression or thoughts of self-harm (monitored for with weight-management medications).
Get medical help right away
- Severe stomach pain that does not go away, with or without vomiting, which can spread to your back (possible pancreatitis).
- Pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, yellow skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools (possible gallbladder problem).
- A lump or swelling in the neck, trouble swallowing, hoarseness or shortness of breath.
- Signs of dehydration such as very little urine, dizziness or confusion after ongoing vomiting or diarrhea.
- Changes in vision if you have diabetes.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or signs of a stroke (sudden weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or seeing).
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
Not for use during pregnancy. The Wegovy label advises stopping at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy because of how long semaglutide stays in the body. Not recommended while breastfeeding without a provider discussion.
Interactions and combinations
Known interactions
- Insulin and sulfonylureas (such as glipizide): higher risk of low blood sugar; doses of those medications may need to be lowered.
- Oral medications in general: slowed stomach emptying can change how other pills are absorbed. Medications with a narrow safety range, such as warfarin or levothyroxine, may need closer monitoring.
- Other GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 medications: should not be combined.
- Alcohol: can worsen nausea and raise the risk of low blood sugar in people with diabetes.
Related treatments and options
Listed for education, not as a recommendation to combine. Any combination needs your provider’s approval.
Do not use two GLP-1 based medications together. There is no evidence of benefit and side effects add up.
- MetforminOnly with provider supervision
Commonly used together in people with type 2 diabetes under provider supervision.
- Insulin or sulfonylureasUse with caution
Raises the risk of low blood sugar; doses are often reduced.
- MIC/B12 or other “lipotropic” injectionsEvidence insufficient
Often marketed alongside GLP-1s, but there is no good evidence they add weight loss.
Monitoring and follow-up
- An initial review of your weight history, medical conditions, current medications and family history of thyroid cancer.
- Baseline labs may be ordered, for example blood sugar (A1c), kidney function or lipids, depending on your history.
- Regular check-ins during dose increases to review side effects, weight trend, hydration and appetite.
- People with diabetes may need closer blood sugar monitoring, and a review of retinopathy history.
- The dose may be held, lowered or stopped if side effects are hard to tolerate or results are not meaningful after a fair trial.
Lab tests and follow-up visits are not included in the medication price unless your plan says so. Your provider will tell you what is needed.
Alternatives to discuss
- Tirzepatide
A weekly injection that acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. In a head-to-head trial of brand-name products, tirzepatide produced more weight loss on average; side effects are similar.
- Semaglutide Oral Tablet
The same medication taken by mouth daily, for people who prefer to avoid injections. Strict timing rules apply around food and water.
- Other approved options
Medications such as phentermine-topiramate or naltrexone-bupropion, and for some people metabolic surgery, are other options to discuss.
- Lifestyle-only approach
Structured nutrition, activity and behavior programs remain the foundation, and may be enough for some people.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is compounded semaglutide the same as Wegovy or Ozempic?
No. It contains the same active ingredient but is not FDA-approved, and it has not been through the clinical trials or FDA quality review that the brand-name products have. Strength, inactive ingredients and dosing units can differ.
How long will I need to take it?
Semaglutide is studied as a long-term medication. Many people regain weight after stopping, so you and your provider should discuss a long-term plan, including how and when you might taper or stop.
What helps with nausea?
Eat smaller portions, eat slowly, stop at the first sign of fullness, and limit fatty or very sweet foods. Stay hydrated. Tell your provider if nausea or vomiting is severe or keeps you from drinking fluids.
Do I need to tell my surgeon or dentist?
Yes. Because semaglutide slows stomach emptying, tell anyone planning anesthesia or sedation that you take it. They may give specific instructions before the procedure.
Will I lose muscle?
Some of the weight lost with any approach, including GLP-1 medications, is lean mass. Adequate protein and strength training are commonly recommended to help preserve muscle.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. After your free consultation, a licensed provider reviews your intake and health history to decide whether this treatment is right for you.
How is Semaglutide different from Tirzepatide?
Semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors, while Tirzepatide activates both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Your provider helps you decide which is the better fit during your consultation.
How is Semaglutide taken?
Semaglutide is a small subcutaneous injection you give yourself once a week at home. Clear instructions guide you through each injection, starting with your very first dose.
How soon will I see results?
Most patients notice reduced appetite within the first few weeks. Weight changes build gradually over several months as your provider adjusts your plan. Individual results vary.
What are the common side effects?
The most common effects are mild nausea, fullness, or digestive changes, especially early on. Starting at a low dose helps reduce them. Your care team is available if anything feels off.
What if a provider decides this isn't right for me?
Your consultation is free, and no payment is needed to complete the assessment. If a provider decides this treatment isn't appropriate for you, they will explain why and may suggest other options.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is free and you pay nothing to complete the assessment. If a provider approves treatment, you see the exact monthly price for your plan before you are charged. There are no surprise fees.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes. Medura accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout, and we can provide documentation for reimbursement if you need it.
How is it shipped?
Your treatment arrives in plain, unbranded packaging with no pharmacy name on the outside. Temperature-sensitive items ship with cold-chain protection.
What happens after I request treatment through Medura?
You complete an online assessment about your health history, current medications and goals. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription. If one is written, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships it, and your provider can adjust or stop treatment as needed. If lab work is needed, your provider will tell you; it may be ordered and billed separately.
