Semaglutide Oral Tablet
How Semaglutide Oral helps with weight loss
Semaglutide Oral Tablet is the tablet formulation of semaglutide, the same GLP-1 medication offered as a weekly injection. It is taken by mouth instead of by injection, so it is a separate formulation with its own program. Weight management is personal. Your provider uses your history, goals, and health information to decide whether a GLP-1 medication fits, and which one makes sense for you.
Two GLP-1 options
Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are both weekly injections. Your provider explains the differences and which may suit you better.
Metabolic support
MIC-B12 (methionine, inositol, choline, and B12) is available as an add-on your provider may consider alongside your plan.
Ongoing follow-up
Your care team checks in, adjusts your dose over time, and answers questions along the way.
Provider-guided from start to finish
A licensed provider reviews your health history, checks for contraindications, sets an appropriate starting plan, and monitors your progress over time.
How to use it
Clear instructions for your specific medication arrive with your first order.

It's not a lack of willpower.It's biology.
Appetite, hormones and metabolism can quietly work against you. A Medura plan is built by a licensed provider to work with your body, not against it.
Hunger stays switched on. Cravings and constant food noise can keep pulling at you, even right after a full meal.
Hormones change the rules. Age, stress, poor sleep, pregnancy and menopause can all shift how your body holds on to weight.
Your body fights back. As you lose weight, metabolism can slow and appetite can rise, so every fresh start feels harder.

Medication guide
What to know about Semaglutide Oral Tablet
General education to help you prepare for a conversation with a licensed provider. It is not a prescription or personal medical advice.
- Generic name
- Semaglutide
- Brand names
- Rybelsus (oral, type 2 diabetes); Wegovy and Ozempic (injections)
- Drug class
- GLP-1 receptor agonist
- Form
- Tablet taken by mouth once daily
- Regulatory status
- Compounded, not FDA-approved
- FDA-approved use
- Rybelsus: to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, with diet and exercise.
Brand-name oral semaglutide (Rybelsus) is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and contains an absorption enhancer (SNAC) that lets semaglutide survive the stomach. A compounded semaglutide tablet is not FDA-approved, and it has not been shown to be absorbed the same way as the brand-name tablet.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. A compounded preparation can differ from approved products in strength, ingredients, dosage form and how it is absorbed, so it should not be assumed to work the same way as an approved medication. Compounding is meant for patients whose needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug.
Overview
A daily semaglutide tablet for people who prefer to avoid injections. Like the injection, it is meant to lower appetite as part of a long-term weight-management plan.
Who may be evaluated for it
- Adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol (the criteria used for the FDA-approved weight-management products).
- People who have tried nutrition and activity changes and want medical support alongside them.
Who may not be a good fit
- Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
- People who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People with a history of pancreatitis, severe stomach-emptying problems (gastroparesis) or a prior serious allergic reaction to the medication need a careful provider review and are often not candidates.
- People using GLP-1 medications for cosmetic weight loss without a medical indication.
How it works
Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after eating. It acts on GLP-1 receptors in the brain areas that control hunger and fullness, so you tend to feel full sooner and think about food less.
It also slows how quickly the stomach empties and helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high. Because it lasts about a week in the body, it is given once weekly.
What is still uncertain
Researchers are still studying exactly how much of the weight effect comes from the brain versus the gut, and why some people respond much more than others.
Potential benefits and realistic timelines
What the evidence supports
- Brand-name oral semaglutide lowers A1c and body weight in adults with type 2 diabetes in the PIONEER trials.
- Higher-dose brand-name oral semaglutide produced meaningful weight loss in the OASIS weight-management trials.
Not established
- How much semaglutide a compounded tablet delivers into the blood has not been established. Results from brand-name trials cannot be assumed to apply.
- There is no evidence that oral and injectable compounded forms are interchangeable dose for dose.
- First weeksAppetite changes, if any, often start gradually. Stomach side effects are most common early and after dose increases.
- Months 1 to 3The dose is typically increased stepwise, about every 30 days, as tolerated.
- Around 3 to 6 monthsProviders commonly reassess weight trend and tolerability.
- After stoppingWeight often returns after stopping, so benefits depend on continued treatment.
Results vary from person to person. Your provider decides whether and how long to continue.
How it’s used
For brand-name Rybelsus, the label starts at 3 mg daily for 30 days, then 7 mg, with a possible increase to 14 mg. A compounded tablet’s strengths may differ; follow your pharmacy label.
- For brand-name Rybelsus: take on an empty stomach first thing in the morning with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines.
- Ask your provider and pharmacist whether the same timing rules apply to your compounded tablet.
- Swallow whole unless your label says otherwise.
If you miss a dose
For brand-name Rybelsus, skip a missed dose and take the next one the following day. Follow your pharmacy label for a compounded tablet.
Storage and handling
Store at room temperature in the original container, away from moisture, unless your pharmacy label says otherwise.
Your prescription label and provider instructions always take priority over this general information. Do not change your dose or stop without talking to your provider.
Side effects and safety
More common, usually manageable
- Nausea
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain, bloating or burping
- Headache and tiredness
- Injection-site redness
Less common but serious
- Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
- Gallbladder problems, including gallstones.
- Kidney injury, usually from dehydration after vomiting or diarrhea.
- Low blood sugar, mainly when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea.
- Serious allergic reactions.
- Thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodent studies (boxed warning on the FDA-approved products); whether this happens in humans is unknown.
- Slowed stomach emptying, which can raise the risk of inhaling stomach contents during anesthesia or sedation.
- Worsening diabetic eye disease (retinopathy) in people with diabetes.
- Increased heart rate.
- Depression or thoughts of self-harm (monitored for with weight-management medications).
Get medical help right away
- Severe stomach pain that does not go away, with or without vomiting, which can spread to your back (possible pancreatitis).
- Pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, yellow skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools (possible gallbladder problem).
- A lump or swelling in the neck, trouble swallowing, hoarseness or shortness of breath.
- Signs of dehydration such as very little urine, dizziness or confusion after ongoing vomiting or diarrhea.
- Changes in vision if you have diabetes.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or signs of a stroke (sudden weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or seeing).
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
Not for use during pregnancy. The Wegovy label advises stopping at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy because of how long semaglutide stays in the body. Not recommended while breastfeeding without a provider discussion.
Interactions and combinations
Known interactions
- Insulin and sulfonylureas (such as glipizide): higher risk of low blood sugar; doses of those medications may need to be lowered.
- Oral medications in general: slowed stomach emptying can change how other pills are absorbed. Medications with a narrow safety range, such as warfarin or levothyroxine, may need closer monitoring.
- Other GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 medications: should not be combined.
- Alcohol: can worsen nausea and raise the risk of low blood sugar in people with diabetes.
- Levothyroxine: brand-name oral semaglutide raised levothyroxine exposure in studies; thyroid levels may need monitoring.
Related treatments and options
Listed for education, not as a recommendation to combine. Any combination needs your provider’s approval.
Do not combine oral and injected GLP-1 medications.
- LevothyroxineUse with caution
Separate as directed and monitor thyroid levels.
- Insulin or sulfonylureasUse with caution
Raises the risk of low blood sugar.
Monitoring and follow-up
- An initial review of your weight history, medical conditions, current medications and family history of thyroid cancer.
- Baseline labs may be ordered, for example blood sugar (A1c), kidney function or lipids, depending on your history.
- Regular check-ins during dose increases to review side effects, weight trend, hydration and appetite.
- People with diabetes may need closer blood sugar monitoring, and a review of retinopathy history.
- The dose may be held, lowered or stopped if side effects are hard to tolerate or results are not meaningful after a fair trial.
Lab tests and follow-up visits are not included in the medication price unless your plan says so. Your provider will tell you what is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a semaglutide tablet work as well as the injection?
For the brand-name products, both lower weight and blood sugar, but higher oral doses are needed because very little is absorbed. For compounded tablets, absorption has not been established, so equivalence is unknown.
Why do the timing rules matter?
For brand-name Rybelsus, food, drinks and other pills taken too soon greatly reduce how much medicine is absorbed. Ask whether your compounded tablet has the same requirement.
Is a compounded tablet FDA-approved?
No. Only brand-name Rybelsus is an FDA-approved oral semaglutide, and it is approved for type 2 diabetes.
What side effects should I expect?
Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and stomach pain are most common, especially early. Severe or persistent stomach pain needs prompt medical attention.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. After your free consultation, a licensed provider reviews your intake to decide whether a GLP-1 medication is appropriate for you.
What is the difference between Semaglutide and Tirzepatide?
Both are weekly injections. Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptor; Tirzepatide acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Your provider explains which may suit you.
What is MIC-B12?
MIC-B12 combines methionine, inositol, choline, and vitamin B12. Your provider decides whether it makes sense as part of your plan.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes. Medura accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout, and we can provide documentation for reimbursement if you need it.
What happens after I request treatment through Medura?
You complete an online assessment about your health history, current medications and goals. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription. If one is written, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships it, and your provider can adjust or stop treatment as needed. If lab work is needed, your provider will tell you; it may be ordered and billed separately.
