Medication guide
What to know about Progesterone Capsule
General education to help you prepare for a conversation with a licensed provider. It is not a prescription or personal medical advice.
- Generic name
- Progesterone (micronized)
- Brand names
- Prometrium (100 and 200 mg capsules)
- Drug class
- Progestogen
- Form
- Immediate-release capsule
- Regulatory status
- Compounded, not FDA-approved
- FDA-approved use
- Prometrium: preventing endometrial hyperplasia in postmenopausal women taking estrogen; secondary amenorrhea.
Micronized progesterone capsules (Prometrium) are FDA-approved. A compounded immediate-release progesterone capsule is not FDA-approved, and its strength and absorption have not been reviewed by FDA.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. A compounded preparation can differ from approved products in strength, ingredients, dosage form and how it is absorbed, so it should not be assumed to work the same way as an approved medication. Compounding is meant for patients whose needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug.
Overview
Progesterone protects the uterine lining in women with a uterus who take estrogen, and is part of many menopause hormone regimens.
Who may be evaluated for it
- Women with a uterus who are taking systemic estrogen.
- Women with certain menstrual irregularities, as assessed by a provider.
Who may not be a good fit
- Women with unexplained vaginal bleeding, breast cancer, a past blood clot or stroke, or active liver disease.
- Anyone with a peanut allergy should check: Prometrium contains peanut oil; compounded capsules may differ.
How it works
Progesterone counterbalances estrogen’s growth effect on the uterine lining, which prevents the lining from overgrowing and lowers endometrial cancer risk. It also has a calming effect in the brain, which is why it can cause drowsiness.
Potential benefits and realistic timelines
What the evidence supports
- Taken with estrogen, it protects against endometrial hyperplasia.
Early or limited research
- Some studies suggest it may help sleep in menopausal women.
Not established
- That compounded progesterone protects the uterus as reliably as Prometrium. Topical progesterone creams have not been shown to protect the uterus.
- First cyclesIrregular spotting is common in the first months of combined therapy.
- About 3 to 6 monthsBleeding patterns usually settle; providers reassess.
Results vary from person to person. Your provider decides whether and how long to continue.
How it’s used
- Usually taken at bedtime because it can cause drowsiness or dizziness.
- Taken either daily or for 12 or more days each month, depending on your regimen.
If you miss a dose
Take it when you remember the same evening. If it is already the next day, skip it. Do not double up.
Storage and handling
Room temperature, away from moisture and light.
Your prescription label and provider instructions always take priority over this general information. Do not change your dose or stop without talking to your provider.

- A follow-up visit within about 3 months of starting, then at least yearly to reassess dose and whether to continue.
- Any unexpected vaginal bleeding is evaluated promptly.
- Routine hormone blood levels are generally not recommended to guide menopause therapy, per The Menopause Society.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why take it at night?
Progesterone can make you drowsy or dizzy, so bedtime dosing is usually recommended.
Does progesterone cream protect the uterus?
Topical progesterone creams have not been shown to protect the uterine lining. Oral micronized progesterone has.
Is spotting normal?
Irregular spotting is common in the first months. Report heavy, persistent or new bleeding after it has settled.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. After your free consultation, a licensed provider reviews your intake, symptoms, and health history to decide what’s appropriate for you.
Is every formulation appropriate for me?
No. Your provider selects a formulation based on your individual symptoms, history, and goals, not every option listed is appropriate for every patient.
Is this available in my state?
Availability varies by formulation and state. Your provider will confirm what can be prescribed and shipped to you during your consultation.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes. Medura accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout, and we can provide documentation for reimbursement if you need it.
What happens after I request treatment through Medura?
You complete an online assessment about your health history, current medications and goals. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription. If one is written, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships it, and your provider can adjust or stop treatment as needed. If lab work is needed, your provider will tell you; it may be ordered and billed separately.
