DHEA is a hormone your body naturally makes less of with age, and this compounded cream offers a topical way to use it. Its benefits depend on why it's prescribed and the evidence is mixed, so a provider reviews whether it's appropriate. Supplied as a 30 g container.

What to know about DHEA Cream

General education to help you prepare for a conversation with a licensed provider. It is not a prescription or personal medical advice.

Generic name
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
Brand names
Intrarosa (FDA-approved vaginal insert, prasterone)
Drug class
Adrenal steroid hormone (precursor to estrogens and androgens)
Form
Cream
Regulatory status
Compounded, not FDA-approved
FDA-approved use
Intrarosa (vaginal prasterone): moderate to severe pain during sex due to menopause.

DHEA cream is a compounded preparation and is not FDA-approved. The only FDA-approved DHEA product is a 6.5 mg vaginal insert (prasterone, Intrarosa) for pain with sex due to menopause. Oral DHEA is also sold as a dietary supplement, which FDA does not review for effectiveness.

Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. A compounded preparation can differ from approved products in strength, ingredients, dosage form and how it is absorbed, so it should not be assumed to work the same way as an approved medication. Compounding is meant for patients whose needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug.

Overview

DHEA cream is used by some providers for vaginal dryness or low sexual desire after menopause. The strongest evidence is for the approved vaginal insert.

Who may be evaluated for it

  • Postmenopausal women with vaginal dryness or pain with sex.

Who may not be a good fit

  • Women with a history of breast or other hormone-sensitive cancer.
  • Anyone with unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How it works

DHEA is a hormone the body converts into small amounts of estrogen and testosterone inside tissues. Used vaginally, it is converted locally, which helps restore vaginal tissue.

Potential benefits and realistic timelines

What the evidence supports

  • Vaginal prasterone (the approved insert) improves pain with sex due to menopause.

Early or limited research

  • Small studies suggest possible effects on sexual function.

  • Wash hands after use.

If you miss a dose

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DHEA cream the same as Intrarosa?

No. Intrarosa is an FDA-approved vaginal insert with a fixed dose. DHEA cream is compounded and not FDA-approved.

Will DHEA help with energy or aging?

These claims are not supported by good evidence.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. After your free consultation, a licensed provider reviews your intake, symptoms, and health history to decide what’s appropriate for you.

Is every formulation appropriate for me?

No. Your provider selects a formulation based on your individual symptoms, history, and goals, not every option listed is appropriate for every patient.

Is this available in my state?

Availability varies by formulation and state. Your provider will confirm what can be prescribed and shipped to you during your consultation.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes. Medura accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout, and we can provide documentation for reimbursement if you need it.

What happens after I request treatment through Medura?

You complete an online assessment about your health history, current medications and goals. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription. If one is written, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships it, and your provider can adjust or stop treatment as needed. If lab work is needed, your provider will tell you; it may be ordered and billed separately.
