Sermorelin Injectable
Sermorelin is a peptide that prompts your pituitary gland to release more of its own growth hormone, rather than supplying the hormone directly. Some adults explore it as part of a provider-guided wellness plan, though research on its benefits for aging is still limited. It is compounded and not FDA-approved, and supply options vary by prescription.

Sermorelin Injectable
How Sermorelin supports energy and recovery
Sermorelin is a growth hormone-releasing hormone analogue that signals the pituitary gland to produce more of its own growth hormone naturally. Unlike synthetic growth hormone, it works with your body rather than replacing what it makes. Sermorelin does not replace your growth hormone. It signals your pituitary gland to produce more of its own, preserving the natural feedback loops your body uses to regulate levels safely over time.
Works with your body, not around it
Unlike synthetic HGH, Sermorelin stimulates your own pituitary to release growth hormone in pulses that follow your natural rhythm. Your body retains control of how much it produces, which is a meaningful difference from synthetic HGH.
Sleep, recovery, and lean composition
Growth hormone is released primarily during deep sleep and plays a central role in tissue repair and lean body maintenance. Many patients notice improved sleep and recovery before other changes become apparent.

What to know about Sermorelin Injectable
General education to help you prepare for a conversation with a licensed provider. It is not a prescription or personal medical advice.
- Generic name
- Sermorelin acetate
- Brand names
- Geref (discontinued)
- Drug class
- Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) analog
- Form
- Injection under the skin
- Regulatory status
- Compounded, not FDA-approved
- FDA-approved use
- Previously (Geref): idiopathic growth hormone deficiency in children; diagnostic evaluation of pituitary function.
Sermorelin was FDA-approved (Geref) for growth hormone deficiency in children and for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer discontinued it in 2008; FDA has stated this was not for safety or effectiveness reasons. No FDA-approved sermorelin is currently marketed, so available sermorelin is compounded. Use in adults for wellness or aging is off-label and not established.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. A compounded preparation can differ from approved products in strength, ingredients, dosage form and how it is absorbed, so it should not be assumed to work the same way as an approved medication. Compounding is meant for patients whose needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug.
Overview
Sermorelin is used by some providers in adults to stimulate the body’s own growth hormone release. Benefits for aging, body composition or sleep in healthy adults are not established.
Who may be evaluated for it
- Adults who have discussed the limited evidence with a provider and have no condition that growth hormone could worsen.
Who may not be a good fit
- People with active cancer or a history of cancer (growth hormone signals can promote cell growth).
- People with untreated hypothyroidism, or pituitary or hypothalamic disease, need specialist review.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
How it works
Sermorelin is a short piece of the brain’s natural GHRH. It signals the pituitary gland to release growth hormone in pulses, which then raises IGF-1, a hormone made mostly by the liver.
Because it works through the pituitary, the body’s normal feedback controls still apply, unlike direct growth hormone injections.
What is still uncertain
Whether raising growth hormone in healthy adults improves health, and what the long-term effects are, is not known.
Potential benefits and realistic timelines
What the evidence supports
- Sermorelin increases growth hormone release and IGF-1 levels.
- It increased growth in children with growth hormone deficiency (approved use, now discontinued).
Early or limited research
- Small studies in older adults reported changes in IGF-1 and some body composition measures.
Not established
- Anti-aging effects.
- Meaningful improvements in muscle, fat loss, sleep or energy in healthy adults.
- Long-term safety in adults.
- WeeksIGF-1 levels can rise within a few weeks.
- 3 to 6 monthsProviders commonly reassess IGF-1, side effects and how you feel.
Results vary from person to person. Your provider decides whether and how long to continue.
How it’s used
- Usually injected under the skin at bedtime, on an empty stomach, as directed.
- Use a new sterile needle each time and rotate sites.
If you miss a dose
Skip it and resume your usual schedule. Do not double up.
Storage and handling
Refrigerate after mixing; follow the beyond-use date on your label.
Your prescription label and provider instructions always take priority over this general information. Do not change your dose or stop without talking to your provider.
Side effects and safety
More common, usually manageable
- Injection-site redness, swelling or pain
- Flushing
- Headache
- Dizziness
Less common but serious
- Allergic reactions

Get medical help right away
- Hives, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or signs of a stroke (sudden weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or seeing).
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Known interactions
- Glucocorticoids (steroids) can blunt its effect.
- Thyroid hormone status affects response.
- Insulin and diabetes medications: growth hormone can raise blood sugar.
Related treatments and options

- IGF-1 rechecked to keep it in an age-appropriate range.
- Review of side effects such as swelling or joint pain.
Lab tests and follow-up visits are not included in the medication price unless your plan says so. Your provider will tell you what is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. After your free consultation, a licensed provider reviews your intake and health history to decide whether this treatment is right for you.
How is Sermorelin different from HGH?
Sermorelin stimulates your body to produce its own growth hormone naturally, rather than replacing it with synthetic hormone. Your provider determines whether it is appropriate for you.
How is Sermorelin taken?
Sermorelin is typically a small subcutaneous injection you give yourself at home before bed, timed to work with your body's natural hormone rhythm. Your provider sets your dose and schedule.
How soon will I notice results?
Many patients notice better sleep and recovery in the first weeks. Lean composition and energy changes build over months. Individual results vary.
What are the common side effects?
Effects are usually mild, such as redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site, temporary flushing, mild fluid retention early on, or an occasional headache or dizziness. Your provider reviews the risks with you during your consultation.
What if a provider decides this isn't right for me?
Your consultation is free, and no payment is needed to complete the assessment. If a provider decides this treatment isn't appropriate for you, they will explain why and may suggest other options.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is free and you pay nothing to complete the assessment. If a provider approves treatment, you see the exact monthly price for your plan before you are charged. There are no surprise fees.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes. Medura accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout, and we can provide documentation for reimbursement if you need it.
How is it shipped?
Your treatment arrives in plain, unbranded packaging with no pharmacy name on the outside. Temperature-sensitive items ship with cold-chain protection.
What happens after I request treatment through Medura?
You complete an online assessment about your health history, current medications and goals. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription. If one is written, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships it, and your provider can adjust or stop treatment as needed. If lab work is needed, your provider will tell you; it may be ordered and billed separately.
