Anastrozole SR Capsule
Anastrozole lowers estrogen by limiting its conversion from testosterone, and some providers use it when estrogen climbs too high during testosterone therapy. That use is off-label, so this sustained-release capsule is prescribed only when your labs and provider support it. The quantity is set by your prescription.

Anastrozole SR Capsule
How Anastrozole SR supports healthy testosterone care
Anastrozole SR is a sustained-release capsule containing anastrozole, an aromatase inhibitor. It is not a form of testosterone. Its listed range is 0.1–1 mg, and the strength is titrated per prescription. Testosterone therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Your provider uses your symptoms, history, and lab results to decide whether treatment fits and which formulation makes sense.
Lab-informed decisions
Your provider reviews existing labs or orders new ones to confirm whether low testosterone is present before recommending anything.
Several formulation options
Injectable, topical, and oral options are available through our pharmacy network. Your provider explains why one may suit you better than another.
Ongoing follow-up
Your provider checks in on how you are responding and adjusts your plan over time rather than writing a single prescription and moving on.
Provider-guided from start to finish
A licensed provider reviews your health history, checks for contraindications, sets an appropriate starting plan, and monitors your progress over time.
How to use it
Clear instructions for your specific formulation arrive with your first order.

What to know about Anastrozole SR Capsule
General education to help you prepare for a conversation with a licensed provider. It is not a prescription or personal medical advice.
- Generic name
- Anastrozole
- Brand names
- Arimidex (immediate-release tablet)
- Drug class
- Aromatase inhibitor
- Form
- Sustained-release capsule taken by mouth
- Regulatory status
- Compounded, not FDA-approved
- FDA-approved use
- Arimidex: certain types of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Anastrozole is FDA-approved only as an immediate-release tablet for breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Use in men on testosterone therapy is off-label, and a sustained-release (SR) capsule is a compounded preparation that is not FDA-approved.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. A compounded preparation can differ from approved products in strength, ingredients, dosage form and how it is absorbed, so it should not be assumed to work the same way as an approved medication. Compounding is meant for patients whose needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug.
Overview
Some providers prescribe low-dose anastrozole to men on testosterone therapy who develop high estradiol with symptoms such as breast tenderness. It is not a routine part of testosterone therapy.
Who may be evaluated for it
- Men on testosterone therapy with symptomatic high estradiol (for example, breast tenderness or enlargement) confirmed by a blood test.
Who may not be a good fit
- Men on testosterone without symptoms, based on an estradiol number alone.
- Men with low bone density or osteoporosis.
- Anyone who is pregnant or could become pregnant.
How it works
Aromatase is the enzyme that converts testosterone into estradiol, a form of estrogen. Anastrozole blocks this enzyme, lowering estradiol levels.
Men need some estradiol for bone strength, sex drive, erections and mood, so the goal is never to remove it entirely.
What is still uncertain
The ideal estradiol range for men on testosterone therapy has not been defined.
Potential benefits and realistic timelines
What the evidence supports
- Anastrozole reliably lowers estradiol levels.
Not established
- That routinely lowering estradiol in men on testosterone improves symptoms or outcomes. The Endocrine Society does not recommend routine use.
- Any benefit of a sustained-release form over the standard tablet.
- Days to weeksEstradiol levels fall within days of starting.
- 2 to 8 weeksProviders usually recheck estradiol and symptoms to make sure levels are not too low.
Results vary from person to person. Your provider decides whether and how long to continue.
How it’s used
- Take exactly as directed on the label; doses used in men are much lower and less frequent than in breast cancer treatment.
- Can be taken with or without food.
If you miss a dose
Take it when you remember unless it is close to your next dose. Do not double up.
Storage and handling
Room temperature in a closed container, away from moisture.
Your prescription label and provider instructions always take priority over this general information. Do not change your dose or stop without talking to your provider.
Side effects and safety
More common, usually manageable
- Joint aches or stiffness
- Hot flashes
- Lower sex drive or erection problems if estradiol falls too low
- Fatigue and low mood
Less common but serious
- Bone loss with long-term or excessive estrogen suppression
- Unfavorable cholesterol changes
- Serious skin or allergic reactions (rare)
Get medical help right away
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or a blistering skin rash
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or signs of a stroke (sudden weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or seeing).
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
Can harm a developing baby. Not for anyone who is or may become pregnant.
Interactions and combinations
Known interactions
- Estrogen-containing products and tamoxifen counteract or reduce anastrozole’s effect.
Related treatments and options
Listed for education, not as a recommendation to combine. Any combination needs your provider’s approval.
- Testosterone therapyOnly with provider supervision
Only for men with symptomatic high estradiol, with lab monitoring.
- Enclomiphene CitrateEvidence insufficient
Combinations are used by some clinics, but evidence is limited.
Monitoring and follow-up
- Estradiol (preferably a sensitive assay) before starting and a few weeks after.
- Symptom review: joint pain, libido, mood.
- Bone density may be considered with long-term use.
Lab tests and follow-up visits are not included in the medication price unless your plan says so. Your provider will tell you what is needed.
Alternatives to discuss
- Adjusting the testosterone dose
Lowering the dose or splitting it into more frequent injections often lowers estradiol without another medication.
- Enclomiphene Citrate
A different approach to raising testosterone; not FDA-approved.
Lab tested medications for quality and potency.
Every medication ships from a licensed U.S. pharmacy in our network, delivered straight to your door.
Third party quality control testing
Compounded in U.S. pharmacies

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need anastrozole with testosterone?
Most men do not. Guidelines advise against routine use. It is considered when high estradiol causes symptoms.
What happens if my estrogen goes too low?
You may notice joint pain, low libido, erection problems, low mood or fatigue, and long-term bone loss is possible. Tell your provider.
Is the SR capsule FDA-approved?
No. Only the immediate-release anastrozole tablet is FDA-approved, and only for breast cancer.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. After your free consultation, a licensed provider reviews your intake and relevant lab work to decide whether testosterone therapy is appropriate for you.
Will I need lab work?
Your provider will review existing labs or order new ones to confirm whether low testosterone is present before recommending treatment.
What if a provider decides this isn’t right for me?
Your consultation is free. If a provider decides testosterone therapy isn’t appropriate for you, they will explain why and may suggest other options.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes. Medura accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout, and we can provide documentation for reimbursement if you need it.
How is it shipped?
Your treatment arrives in plain, unbranded packaging with no pharmacy name on the outside. Temperature-sensitive items ship with cold-chain protection.
What happens after I request treatment through Medura?
You complete an online assessment about your health history, current medications and goals. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription. If one is written, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships it, and your provider can adjust or stop treatment as needed. If lab work is needed, your provider will tell you; it may be ordered and billed separately.
