Drug class
5-alpha reductase inhibitor
Form

Regulatory status
FDA-approved medication
FDA-approved use
Male pattern hair loss in men (Propecia, 1 mg).

Finasteride 1 mg is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men.

Overview

Finasteride slows hair loss and can regrow some hair at the crown and mid-scalp in men with male-pattern hair loss.

Who may be evaluated for it

  • Men with male-pattern hair loss, especially early to moderate thinning at the crown or mid-scalp.

Who may not be a good fit

  • Women who are or may become pregnant must not take or handle crushed or broken tablets: finasteride can cause abnormal development of the genitals of a male baby.
  • Women in general (finasteride 1 mg is approved for men only).
  • Men with a history of depression should discuss it first, as mood changes have been reported.

How it works

The enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone into DHT. In men with a genetic tendency, DHT shrinks hair follicles on the scalp over time.

Finasteride blocks this enzyme and lowers scalp and blood DHT by about two-thirds, which slows follicle shrinkage.

Potential benefits and realistic timelines

What the evidence supports

  • In trials, most men taking finasteride 1 mg kept their hair or regrew some over 2 years, compared with continued loss on placebo.

Not established

  • Regrowth of a fully bald area or a receding front hairline (effect there is smaller).
  • Benefit in women.
  1. 3 monthsShedding may slow. Some people notice brief extra shedding early on.
  2. 6 to 12 monthsVisible improvement, if it occurs, is usually judged here.
  3. After stoppingGains are typically lost within about 12 months.

Results vary from person to person. Your provider decides whether and how long to continue.

How it’s used

FDA label: 1 mg once daily, with or without food.

  • Take one tablet daily at about the same time.
  • Women who could become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets.

If you miss a dose

Skip the missed dose and take the next one as usual. Do not double up.

Storage and handling

Room temperature in a closed container.

Your prescription label and provider instructions always take priority over this general information. Do not change your dose or stop without talking to your provider.

Side effects and safety

More common, usually manageable

  • Lower sex drive
  • Erection problems
  • Less semen
  • Breast tenderness

Less common but serious

  • Sexual side effects: lower sex drive, erection problems and reduced ejaculate. These usually resolve after stopping, but some men report them persisting.
  • Depression and thoughts of self-harm (added to the label in 2022).
  • Breast enlargement or tenderness; report any breast lumps or nipple discharge.
  • Lowers PSA by about half, which can mask prostate cancer if not accounted for.

Get medical help right away

  • Thoughts of harming yourself, or worsening depression.
  • Swelling of the lips, face or throat, or trouble breathing.

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or signs of a stroke (sudden weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or seeing).

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility

Must not be used by pregnant women or handled as crushed tablets. Men taking finasteride do not need to stop for a partner’s pregnancy, but discuss with your provider. Semen changes are possible.

Interactions and combinations

Known interactions

  • No major drug interactions are known.
  • Do not combine with dutasteride or another 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.

Related treatments and options

Listed for education, not as a recommendation to combine. Any combination needs your provider’s approval.

  • Topical minoxidilSupported by evidence

Commonly combined; studies suggest better results than either alone.

  • Already contains finasteride.

Monitoring and follow-up

  • Baseline photos of the scalp help judge progress objectively.
  • A review at about 6 and 12 months to decide whether to continue.
  • Tell anyone ordering a PSA test that you take finasteride, so the result is interpreted correctly.
  • Report mood changes or sexual side effects at any time.

Lab tests and follow-up visits are not included in the medication price unless your plan says so. Your provider will tell you what is needed.

Alternatives to discuss

Frequently Asked Questions

Will finasteride affect my sex life?

A small share of men report lower sex drive, erection problems or less semen. These usually go away after stopping. Some men report persistent symptoms; this is still being studied.

Do I have to take it forever?

Benefits last only while you take it. Hair lost to male-pattern balding usually returns to its previous trend within a year of stopping.

Does it affect PSA tests?

Yes, it lowers PSA by about 50%. Tell your doctor so they can interpret it correctly.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. After your free consultation, a licensed provider reviews your intake and health history to decide what’s appropriate for you.

How long before I see results?

Hair loss treatments typically require months of consistent use before changes become noticeable. Individual results vary, and your provider will discuss realistic expectations with you.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes. Medura accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout, and we can provide documentation for reimbursement if you need it.

What happens after I request treatment through Medura?

You complete an online assessment about your health history, current medications and goals. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription. If one is written, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships it, and your provider can adjust or stop treatment as needed. If lab work is needed, your provider will tell you; it may be ordered and billed separately.
