What to know about Finasteride/Minoxidil Solution
General education to help you prepare for a conversation with a licensed provider. It is not a prescription or personal medical advice.
- Generic name
- Finasteride and minoxidil topical solution
- Drug class
- 5-alpha reductase inhibitor plus vasodilator
- Form
- Solution applied to the scalp
- Regulatory status
- Compounded, not FDA-approved
Topical finasteride is not FDA-approved in any form. In April 2025, FDA alerted patients and providers to potential risks of compounded topical finasteride, including reports of depression, suicidal thoughts, erectile dysfunction and reduced libido, and the risk of exposing women and children through skin contact. Topical minoxidil is FDA-approved over the counter at 2% and 5%; higher strengths are compounded.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. A compounded preparation can differ from approved products in strength, ingredients, dosage form and how it is absorbed, so it should not be assumed to work the same way as an approved medication. Compounding is meant for patients whose needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug.
Overview
A compounded scalp solution combining finasteride and minoxidil, intended to treat male-pattern hair loss with less finasteride reaching the bloodstream than a pill.
Who may be evaluated for it
- Men with male-pattern hair loss, especially early to moderate thinning at the crown or mid-scalp.
Who may not be a good fit
- Women who are or may become pregnant must not take or handle crushed or broken tablets: finasteride can cause abnormal development of the genitals of a male baby.
- Women in general (finasteride 1 mg is approved for men only).
- Men with a history of depression should discuss it first, as mood changes have been reported.
How it works
Finasteride applied to the scalp lowers DHT in the follicles, though some is absorbed into the blood.
Minoxidil extends the growth phase of hair follicles.
Potential benefits and realistic timelines
What the evidence supports
- Topical minoxidil 5% is effective and FDA-approved for hair loss.
Early or limited research
- Small trials suggest topical finasteride may slow hair loss with lower blood DHT changes than oral finasteride.
Not established
- Safety and effectiveness of compounded topical finasteride (not FDA-reviewed).
- Benefit of minoxidil strengths above 5%.
- 3 monthsShedding may slow. Some people notice brief extra shedding early on.
- 6 to 12 monthsVisible improvement, if it occurs, is usually judged here.
- After stoppingGains are typically lost within about 12 months.
Results vary from person to person. Your provider decides whether and how long to continue.
How it’s used
FDA label: 1 mg once daily, with or without food.
- Apply the prescribed amount to a dry scalp as directed, and let it dry fully.
- Wash hands right after.
- Avoid letting women or children touch treated areas, pillows or hats until dry, and never let a pregnant woman handle it.
If you miss a dose
Apply at the next scheduled time. Do not apply extra.
Storage and handling
Room temperature, closed tightly, away from flame (solutions often contain alcohol). Follow the beyond-use date on your label.
Your prescription label and provider instructions always take priority over this general information. Do not change your dose or stop without talking to your provider.
Side effects and safety
More common, usually manageable
- Scalp itching, dryness or flaking
- Temporary increased shedding
- Unwanted facial hair if it drips
Less common but serious
- Sexual side effects: lower sex drive, erection problems and reduced ejaculate. These usually resolve after stopping, but some men report them persisting.
- Depression and thoughts of self-harm (added to the label in 2022).
- Breast enlargement or tenderness; report any breast lumps or nipple discharge.
- Lowers PSA by about half, which can mask prostate cancer if not accounted for.
Get medical help right away
- Thoughts of harming yourself, or worsening depression.
- Swelling of the lips, face or throat, or trouble breathing.
- Chest pain, racing heartbeat or fainting (rare with topical minoxidil)
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or signs of a stroke (sudden weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or seeing).
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
Must not be handled by women who are or may become pregnant. Transfer through skin contact is possible.
Interactions and combinations
Known interactions
- Other scalp products may change absorption; ask before combining.
- Do not combine with oral finasteride unless directed.
Related treatments and options
Listed for education, not as a recommendation to combine. Any combination needs your provider’s approval.
- Finasteride 1 mgUse with caution
Combining oral and topical finasteride increases total exposure.
Overlapping ingredients.
Monitoring and follow-up
- Baseline photos of the scalp help judge progress objectively.
- A review at about 6 and 12 months to decide whether to continue.
- Tell anyone ordering a PSA test that you take finasteride, so the result is interpreted correctly.
- Report mood changes or sexual side effects at any time.
Lab tests and follow-up visits are not included in the medication price unless your plan says so. Your provider will tell you what is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is topical finasteride safer than the pill?
Not proven. Less may reach the blood, but FDA has received reports of sexual and mood side effects with compounded topical finasteride, and it can transfer to others.
Can my partner touch my scalp?
Let it dry fully and wash your hands. Pregnant women should avoid contact with treated skin, pillows and hats.
Do I have to take it forever?
Benefits last only while you take it. Hair lost to male-pattern balding usually returns to its previous trend within a year of stopping.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. After your free consultation, a licensed provider reviews your intake and health history to decide what’s appropriate for you.
How long before I see results?
Hair loss treatments typically require months of consistent use before changes become noticeable. Individual results vary, and your provider will discuss realistic expectations with you.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes. Medura accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout, and we can provide documentation for reimbursement if you need it.
What happens after I request treatment through Medura?
You complete an online assessment about your health history, current medications and goals. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription. If one is written, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships it, and your provider can adjust or stop treatment as needed. If lab work is needed, your provider will tell you; it may be ordered and billed separately.
