What is reflex testing?
Reflex testing uses predefined clinical logic to automatically order one or more follow-up tests based on the initial test results. Reflex tests are performed automatically without the intervention of the ordering practitioner. They are conducted using the same sample your patient already provided. If reflex tests are required, there will be additional charges.

Additional details
How reflex testing is triggered
If specimens are positive by the screening assay but negative by the antibody differentiation assay, HIV Confirmation Testing will be performed at an additional charge.
If RPR is reactive, RPR Titer and Syphilis Total Ab will be performed at an additional charge.
If RPR and Syphilis Total Ab do not agree, FTA (Fluorescent Treponemal Ab) will be performed at an additional charge.
Patient instructions
- Collect your urine sample before your blood draw. Bring your urine sample with you to your blood draw. The blood and urine samples MUST be shipped together.
- Do not drink excessive water before your urine collection.
- Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist, Monday through Friday only.
- Please hydrate before your blood draw.
Patient Preparation & Collection Instructions
Before Your Test
- Fasting is not required; eat and drink normally
- For the most accurate results on Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, or Trichomonas testing, avoid urinating for 1-2 hours before providing your urine sample
- Drink plenty of water beforehand; being well-hydrated makes the blood draw easier and helps you provide a urine sample
- Tell your practitioner if you are currently taking or have recently finished a course of antibiotics, as this can interfere with bacterial STI results
Urine Collection
- Collect the "first-catch" (the very first 20-30 mL of your urine stream) directly into the sterile specimen cup provided
- Do not fill the cup with mid-stream urine; finish urinating the rest into the toilet
Blood Draw
- A standard blood sample will be drawn to screen for HIV, Syphilis, and Herpes Simplex Virus
Swab Collection (if applicable)
- If your test includes site swabs, carefully follow the instructions provided with your kit
- Avoid letting the sterile tip of the swab touch any external surface before or after collection to avoid contamination

What happens next
Order your lab test through Medura, just like any other product. Within 24 hours of your order, you'll receive a secure link to create or access your lab test account, where your lab requisition is generated. Depending on your specific test:
Specialty tests
Specialty tests (such as certain stool, saliva, or breath tests) ship directly to your home within 24 hours of your Medura account being set up, with all collection materials, instructions, and prepaid return packaging included.
Standard panels
Standard panels generate a digital requisition inside your Medura account. Enter your zip code to find a nearby Quest or LabCorp location, or schedule a mobile phlebotomist to come to you.
Your account may include personalized supplement recommendations to help address areas of concern identified by your lab work.
