Why Test Hormones?
Each person's hormone levels are unique, like fingerprints, and require personalized treatment. Testing major sex hormones like estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone along with adrenal hormones like DHEA and cortisol can provide valuable information about deficiencies, excesses, and daily patterns. Why Test Using Saliva?
Most hormones in the blood are bound to carrier proteins and not bioavailable to target tissues. Saliva measures unbound, bioavailable hormones, which is why saliva testing is thought to better relate to specific symptoms of excess or deficiency. Salivary testing provides a good option for baseline hormone assessment and for monitoring hormone support over time.
Patient instructions
Before You Start
- Follow the test collection instructions provided with the kit
- Ship your sample Monday through Thursday only
- If you are a menstruating woman, collect one day during days 19-23 of your menstrual cycle (assuming a 28-day cycle); Day 1 of your cycle is the first day of your period
- If you are a man or a non-menstruating woman, collect on any day
Hormone Use Instructions
Do not discontinue any prescription medications without first consulting your healthcare provider:
- Topical hormones: last dose should be 12-24 hours before collecting your first sample; do not use on the day of saliva collection
- Sublingual hormones or troches: last dose should be 24-36 hours before collecting your first sample; drink 2 full glasses of water (about 16 oz) after your last dose to clean the tissues; do not take on the day of saliva collection
- Hormone injections, subcutaneous pellets, or transdermal patches: collect your samples at the halfway point between doses
- Oral hormones (pills): use as prescribed on the day of collection
Cortisol or Cortisol-Containing Products
- If taking a cortisol supplement, glucocorticoid, or cortisol-containing medication, consult your healthcare provider before collecting your samples
- It is recommended to stop using these products 5 days before sample collection
Day of Collection
- Avoid supplements and non-essential medications (do not discontinue any prescription medications without consulting your healthcare provider first)
- Avoid caffeine-containing foods and beverages
- Avoid anti-aging creams
- Collect your first sample 30 minutes after waking
- Avoid eating and drinking for 1 hour before collecting each sample
- Avoid brushing teeth, flossing, or having dental work done for 30 minutes before collecting each sample
What happens next

Specialty tests (such as certain stool, saliva, or breath tests) ship directly to your home within 24 hours of your Medura account being set up, with all collection materials, instructions, and prepaid return packaging included.
Standard panels
Standard panels generate a digital requisition inside your Medura account. Enter your zip code to find a nearby Quest or LabCorp location, or schedule a mobile phlebotomist to come to you.
